Dutch Interior – “Go Fuck Yourself”

Kyle Berger

The LA indie band Dutch Interior specialize in drowsy, country-adjacent tunes, but the final single from their imminent It's Glass EP has a skip in its step. The vividly titled "Go Fuck Yourself" is a slice of smooth '70s piano pop in the tradition of Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson. More modern reference points for this sound include Tobias Jesso, Drugdealer, and Andy Shauf. But not many of those artists have churned out a track this memorable.

Atop a slow, swinging groove marked by steadily plinked piano chords, the band lays down this casually crooned chorus: "But if I'm being honest/ Go fuck yourself/ Go fuck yourself and all your cool friends too/ It seems to me that's what you'd rather do." It's an instance of getting straight to the point but doing it gracefully. I like this sequence from the second verse too: "And maybe it’s true I’m just a creature of fear/ The headlights are too bright
for this little dear/ Right here/ The city’s a bus/ And I'll be roadkill by dusk."

An unnamed member of the band shared this statement: "There’s a lot I love about LA and there’s a lot I hate about it. This song addresses the latter." Listen below, and check out the live video at YouTube since it won't display here as an embed.

It's Glass is out 3/6 on Fat Possum.
