New York singer-songwriter Tracey Nelson is a new addition to the K Records imprint Perennial, which recently has shined a light on lo-fi treasures like Sharp Pins and Winston Hightower. Nelson has the honor of being associated not only with K impresario Calvin Johnson but MJ Lenderman, who produced and features on today's new single "Dolly's Coat."
You can hear what attracted Lenderman to this guy's music. Nelson conjures a ramshackle roots-rock vibe that feels like a wobbly, bleary complement to the Manning Fireworks sound. He sings in a near-yodel that reminds me of Dwight Yoakam, and his acoustic strums are laced with both psychedelic wah-wah guitar and Neil Young-ish harmonica. "Wait 'til you see me wearing Dolly's coat," Nelson boasts on the chorus.
