Sometimes, one deluxe edition just isn't enough. It's been almost two years since This Is Lorelei, the solo project from Water From Your Eyes' Nate Amos, released Box For Buddy, Box For Stars. It was one of our favorite albums of 2024. Last year, This Is Lorelei released a deluxe edition of the album, featuring MJ Lenderman's cover of "Dancing In The Club" and Snail Mail's take on "Two Legs." (Amos also released Holo Boy, an album of his re-recordings of older This Is Lorelei songs, but that's not what we're talking about here.) Now, This Is Lorelei has announced another deluxe edition of Box For Buddy, a super deluxe edition. At this rate, we'll get a Box For Buddy box set before too long.
The new version of Box For Buddy, Box For Stars will have covers of every song on the original album, and it's got an impressive roster of contributors. The previously available covers — from MJ Lenderman, from Snail Mail, and from Bob and Sarah Amos, Nate's father and sister — are all represented. It's also got covers from Waxahatchee, Momma, SASAMI, Tim Heidecker, LUCY aka Cooper B. Handy, and fantasy of a broken heart with Jeff Tweedy. Today, we get to hear a version of "Perfect Hand" from Hayley Williams' new project Power Snatch.
Earlier this year, Paramore leader Hayley Williams and longtime collaborator Daniel James got together to launch the new duo Power Snatch and to release an EP called EP1. We already knew that Williams was into Water From Your Eyes. Last year, Williams did a great on-camera interview with Stereogum ephemera correspondent Rachel Brown, who happens to be Amos' partner in that band. Later this month, Williams will head out on her first-ever solo tour, and Water From Your Eyes will open. With their cover of This Is Lorelei's "Perfect Hand," Williams and James do their own version of the original's drawling drum-machine melodies, and they sound really different with Williams singing them. Amos sings backup vocals on his own song.
It looks like Power Snatch's "Perfect Hand" cover is what led Williams and James to start the band in the first place. In a press release, James says. "We’ve both been fans of Nate's for a long time, and loved getting to rework one of our favorite This is Lorelei songs. His natural way with lyrics and melodies made it easy to translate the song to a different place for this project. It also happened to be the song that started Power Snatch." Amos says, "Getting to hear Hayley and Dan's beautiful take on 'Perfect Hand' for the first time was surreal, getting to contribute vocals was even more so. Couldn't be more stoked for this to exist."
