If you care at all about hardcore music and the people who make it, yesterday was a terrible fucking day. Bo Lueders died. Brady Ebert (allegedly) tried to kill Brendan Yates' father. Shit is fucked up. I was wandering around in a fog all day. I needed a pick-me-up, and Division Of Mind's new album is the heaviest pick-me-up I can imagine.
Richmond DIY heroes Division Of Mind released their incredible self-titled debut way back in 2019. Six or seven years later, the band is only just getting around to releasing their sophomore LP Exoterror. It's exactly what I needed. The band just announced Exoterror earlier this week, sharing two thunderous new songs. Now the whole album is out, and it builds on the brutality of that first album in very gratifying ways.
Division Of Mind's basic musical aesthetic is "what if five Terminators heard Integrity's Humanity Is The Devil and were inspired to form their own band?" The production is thick and soupy, with occasional ominous movie samples and an atmosphere of overwhelming doom. The riffs are elemental and violent. The vocals bring the righteous evil. It's oppressive music that makes me feel free, and maybe it'll have the same effect on you. Listen below.
Exoterror is out now on Triple B/Streets Of Hate.
