A month ago we learned about Covers I, the self-explanatory new EP from ambient composer Vines. She shared a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Silver Springs" with Helado Negro upon announcing the project, and now she's offered up a cover of Wheatus' immortal "Teenage Dirtbag" featuring Wheatus guy (and Stereogum comments section OG) Brendan Brown.
Lots of people have covered "Teenage Dirtbag" over the years, Weezer, Phoebe Bridgers, and Tokyo Police Club among them. Wheatus released a Christmas-themed remake of the track in 2023 and joined Ed Sheeran to perform the original last summer. But an ambient rendition featuring Brown on guitar is a new one. Cassie Wieland runs those familiar words and melodies through the Vines filter, turning it into a post spectral hymn. It sounds like Imogen Heap backed by Sigur Rós, which obviously is a compliment.
