Cobrah & Grimes – “Sign From God”

Yulia Shur

It has been more than six years since Grimes released Miss Anthropocene, and let me tell you, those six years have been eventful. Grimes has lately been planting seeds for Psy Opera a new album that supposedly will not feature any generative AI. At Coachella earlier this year, she made a surprise appearance onstage with Cobrah, a Swedish artist who, at least according to a press release, comes "Stockholm’s underground fetish scene." Today, that song is out.

Cobrah released her album Torn earlier this year, and she's listed as the lead artist on "Sign From God," but there's some question of whether the song will appear on this hypothetical future Grimes LP. It's a throbbing goth-club electro-pop track, and Grimes co-produced it with past collaborator Vadakin. Grimes, Cobrah, and Vadakin co-wrote it with pop professional Madison Love.

Both singers go all seductive-whispery on the track, claiming to be signs from God. Here's one Grimes lyric: "Why am I so hot? You made me this way/ I'm God's favorite, that's my name, what's your name?" Here's another: "Angels at annihilation/ Follow Icarus into the sun/ Zero is superior to one." Listen below.

"Sign From God" is out now on Gagball/Atlantic.
