The only announced guests for Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show Tuesday were Matt Damon, promoting The Odyssey, and Anthony Michael Hall, promoting, uh, Nation's Dumbest. But at the end of the show, there were Phoebe Bridgers and a bunch of kids.
Bridgers has been moving in stealth mode in the run-up to Lost Weekend, her first solo album in six years. In the spring, she played a bunch of phone-free pop-up shows in small venues around the US, culminating in a $1 gig at Madison Square Garden, also phone-free. At these shows, she performed new songs, but she mostly managed to keep details abou those songs from leaking. Last month, she finally shared one of her new tunes with the world at large via a highly entertaining music video for lead single "Lost Boys." With the new album a month away, that's still the only new song she's released, and it's the one she performed in her Fallon performance Tuesday.
Bridgers' appearance was a surprise, but the composition of her backing band was even more of a shocker. In an apparent nod to the Peter Pan-inspired song title, she was joined by about a dozen actual children, all of whom kicked ass. I don't know where she found them or how long she worked with them on their parts, but together, they sounded professional. Watch below.
