Back in the great SoundCloud-rap wave of the '10s, the West Palm Beach weirdo Ghostemane emerged with a messy and fascinating style that combined that moment's underground rap, and its '90s Memphis origins, with metal, hardcore, goth, and industrial. Ghostemane had a strange and prolific run, but he largely disappeared following the release of 2020's Anti-Icon, his most recent LP. But now he's coming back with a new album, just in time for Halloween.
Last month, Ghostemane returned from the abyss with "Zero Day," a new Kenneth Blume-produced single that sounded pretty much exactly like late-'90s rap metal. As it turns out, that was our first taste of the new comeback album AM:FM. Beyond the release date and the (pretty cool) cover art, Ghostemane hasn't yet unveiled the record's details, but it'll include "Zero Day" and "BucketList," the brand-new single that doesn't sound anything like "Zero Day."
Ghostemane produced "BucketList" himself, and there's basically no metal in the beat this time. Instead, it's got a clean, minimal bounce that makes me think of circa-2010 LA jerk music. Ghostemane delivers his lines in a sinister murmur that sometimes boils over into a yowl, but he finds the song's pocket. Below check out the song's spooky Emma Berson-directed video.
