It's always cool when underground rock lifers join forces. Between the two of them, Buzz Osborne and Jeff Pinkus have been making bugged-out noise rock for roughly ten thousand years. Osborne has been leading the Melvins since 1983. Bassist Jeff Pinkus joined the Butthole Surfers in 1985. Now, the two of them have united to form a new band called Gatta Morta, and their first EP is already out.
Osborne and Pinkus make up one half of Gatta Morta, the new supergroup that debuted today. The band also includes Big Business/High On Fire drummer Coady Willis, who has also been a part of the double-drummer Melvins lineup for nearly 20 years now, and Clinton Jacob, from the Chicago duo Mr. Phylzzz. In a press release, Osborne says, "“It’s always a good time for the world to embrace a new heavy/weird band. I had the idea for Gatta Morta while touring last fall. I realized I needed to start a band with these three. Seemed like a no brainer. Solidly weird rock music that needs to happen."
Gatta Morta have already released their debut EP Burn Witch Burn on the storied noise-rock label Amphentamine Reptile, but the whole EP isn't on streaming right now; I suppose you have to buy it to hear the whole thing. But we can post one song: "Black Hall," an impressively thundering riff-monster that could've oozed its way into existence at any point in the past 40 years or so. Check it out below.
