Here at Stereogum, we've been very into pretty much everything we've heard from Jawdropped, the ragged young power-pop band from Los Angeles. They'll release their full-length debut Secret To Spare next month, and the singles "Monday" and "Split Lip" are both keepers. The same is true of "Cup," the new song that they've got out today.
"Cup" is a big endorphin-rush singalong. The hooks are huge, but they don't get in the way of the bittersweet feeling that the song radiates. The band says, "The idea for ‘Cup’ actually came from an older song of ours called ‘Star.’ We wanted to write about this same character who moves to LA with stars in their eyes, only to see themselves burn out. It's about getting swept up in the ‘idea’ of a place, rather than the reality — realizing you're the last one at the party." Check out the Jack Dione-directed video below.
