There's this Oakland band called Unity, right? Not an easy name to search. When Scott assigned this post, I almost threw my laptop out the window. How am I supposed to know all this shit? I don't. I never heard of Unity. Well, now I know about Unity, and I can tell you that they are good. I guess it was worth it.
Unity put out one self-titled album of pleasantly scrappy DIY indie pop in 2016. Bandleader Jeffrey Cheung is the visual artist and zine maker who founded Unity Skateboards. Along with at least one other member of Unity, he also used to be in Meat Market. Now, Unity are back out of nowhere with a new album on the way, and I really like their new song.
The second Unity LP is called Comes Back To You.. / Was There Ever Unity?, and it's coming out next month. Lead single "3 Weeks" is a zippy, catchy fuzz-bath with proudly amateurish harmony vocals that remind me of the Pastels and the Vaselines. Cheung directed the song's video, a sunny slice of Oakland life. Check it out below.
