Tinashe – “Melatonin”

Oh, Tinashe is going for it. Next month the resurgent dance-pop/R&B cult hero will hit us with her new album Popstar, and early singles "Too Easy" and "Crash Out" are extremely encouraging. Today, Tinashe shares the all-out dancefloor blitz "Melatonin," which is already my favorite of the Popstar singles. This thing goes so much harder than a song called "Melatonin" should be expected to go.

Just to clarify: "Melatonin" is not called "Melatonin" because it's relaxing. Instead, it's Tinashe accusing you of being so melatonin. Stop being so melatonin! The track itself is a wriggling, maximalist, borderline experimental techno rager, full of jittery rave drum programming and disorienting vocal edits. Tinashe is operating in the Shygirl zone here. It's the best kind of post-hyperpop freak shit.

Ricky Reed, Zack Sekoff, and Nightfeelings co-produced "Melatonin," and it's got a very fun dance-centric video that 91 Rules directed. Tinashe wears a gigantic hat in the clip. Maybe people will start wearing hats like that now. I hope so. Check it out below.

Popstar is out 9/25 on Nice Life/Atlantic. Never stop never stopping.
