Sports Team – “Billy”

Here's a great way to start a song: "Fuck you, Billy! Where is this going? You know, you're dad's in the bar, and he keeps calling for shots! Well, the lights in the bathroom, yeah, they're whiter than heaven! And your sister's boyfriends keeps looking at his — haw, ya know!" That's how Sports Team start their new single "Billy." They grab your attention right up top, and then they reward it.

UK alt-rockers and Fred again.. haters Sports Team released their long-delayed album Boys These Days last year, and it got a deluxe edition a few months later. They recorded that one in Norway with pop producer Matias Tellez, and their new single "Billy," a one-off for now, feels like a chaotic, energetic turn back in the other direction. It's an explosive, wordy account of a drunken night out, and it's a ton of fun. Here's what guitarist and songwriter Rob Knaggs says about the song:

It’s a love letter to getting desperately, insanely drunk at a carpeted pub on a Tuesday night. We recorded it live at RAK studios over the first weeks of summer with Seth Evans and Adele Phillips. It felt like a return to how we made the first album. Fast, and loose and loud.

Kris R directed appropriately sloppy and charismatic "Billy" video, in which some guy in a giant paper mache head plays the titular role. Check it out below.

"Billy" is out now on Bright Antenna/Distiller.
