My Chemical Romance Tease New Album, Bring Out King Diamond

My Chemical Romance effectively broke up in 2013 before reuniting in 2019. In recent years, they've been touring stadiums and playing their 2006 classic The Black Parade in full, as well as other assorted tracks. They haven't released any new music since reuniting, and their most recent studio album is Danger Days, their 2010 Black Parade follow-up. But now, they're finally talking about making new music.

On Thursday, My Chemical Romance announced an expanded 20th-anniversary reissue of The Black Parade. On Saturday, they played San Antonio's Alamodome, with the Mars Volta opening. During MCR's set, frontman Gerard Way told the crowd, "We’ve really always wanted to make another record, so we hope that life allows us to do that. 'Cause honestly, you guys kept us alive so long. You guys deserve another record. I don’t know when it’ll be, but it’ll be awesome."

That doesn't sound like a firm plan, but it's something. Earlier this year, Hedwig And The Angry Inch creator John Cameron Mitchell talked about working on a secret theater project with My Chemical Romance, so that may or may not have something to do with this. And speaking of theater! MCR's San Antonio show also included a surprise guest appearance from King Diamond, the face-painted Danish metal great and onetime Mercyful Fate frontman. He brought out a sword and knighted the band before joining them on the Black Parade track "Mama."

My Chemical Romance famously formed after Gerard Way witnessed the 9/11 attacks. Later on, his brother and bandmate Mikey Way talked about seeing Gerard in a newspaper article about the attacks. On Friday's 25th anniversary, a Redditor tracked down that newspaper, and a widely circulated photo showed what appears to be Way, right there when it happened.
