Céline Dion Performs First Concert In Over Six Years

Back in 2022, the grand pop diva Céline Dion went public about her battle with a rare neurological disease known as Stiff Person Syndrome, which affects one out of about a million people and which causes spasms that affect general functionality. The condition forced Dion to postpone and then cancel a world tour. She continues to manage the effects of the disease, and after months of intensive physical and vocal training, she made an emotional return to the stage on Saturday night.

Dion memorably performed at the Opening Ceremony of the Paris Olympics in 2024, bringing Kelly Clarkson, who was covering the event for NBC, to tears. Earlier this year, Dion announced a five-week residency at Plenitude Arena outside Paris. That series started on Saturday, with Dion giving her first full performance in six and a half years.

The 58-year-old Dion was in tears when she took the stage, and she delivered what looked like a powerhouse performance, drawing on her English and French-language catalog and hitting some tremendous notes. As The New York Times reports, she told the crowd, "I had promised myself not to cry. I don’t keep my promises."
