It has been almost exactly four years since Tegan And Sara released Crybaby, their most recent album. The widely beloved twin sisters have been plenty busy since then — collaborating with artists like Alex Lahey and Ryan Hemsworth, popping up on The Simpsons, and telling the story of Tegan Quin getting her identity stolen in the Hulu documentary Fanatical: The Catfishing Of Tegan And Sara. Now, they're back with a summery synthpop posse cut.
Tegan And Sara's new song "Our Year" is a collaboration with two fellow Canadian artists, singer Lights and dance producer Felix Cartal. Two years ago, Tegan And Sara collaborated with Cartal on his single "Right On Time," while Lights has covered both T&S and Cartal live. If they sounded cold and robotic on that track, they go in the opposite direction on "Our Year." Over sun-dazed, Passion Pit-esque synths, they get confidently bittersweet: "Everyone keeps telling me it's gonna be our year."
Tegan Quin, who is also about to publish the new young-adult novel Merry Christmess as part of her Clementine Twins series, sent her "Our Year" demo to Cartal, who says, "It had that classic Tegan and Sara feel I've always loved — unafraid to be a little cheeky but totally genuine and refreshing." Tegan says that the song became "something special" when Lights joined it, and Lights says, "This feels like one of those milestone creative experiences you'd be proud to leave behind. I've looked up to Tegan And Sara for years, both for their music and what they stand for."
Technically, "Our Year" is Tegan And Sara's first single since the release of Crybaby, not counting all those guest appearances or their 2023 Elvis Costello/Dave Edmunds cover. The bright, sunny Kyle S. Lee-directed video ends with a golden-hour hangout on the roof of a skyscraper, which is lovely but also slightly stressful. I wish that thing had some railings.
