Things are afoot in Father John Misty's universe. No word yet on the follow-up to 2024's Mahashmashana, but Josh Tillman has dropped two singles this year. "The Old Law" and "The Payoff" were both apocalyptic, Beatles-esque bangers with sweeping Drew Erickson arrangements, and there's another one of those today. "The X-panded Universe" finds FJM once again reckoning with his religious heritage, once again sounding glorious.
"The expanded universe/ And the crossover event/ God is only as good as the villains he invents," Tillman sings as the low-key backing track achieves liftoff. Then comes the song's core refrain: "Everyone gets saved." By the time the chorus comes back around again, "The X-panded Universe" has reached full splendor, and you're liable to end up in your feelings.
Tillman has also announced his first solo tour since 2013, a run of dates in the Western US this December. Check those out below while you spin the new song.
