Native Eloquence – “Doldrum” (Stereogum Premiere)

Shelby Ziesing

It's hard to believe that Native Eloquence is just one person, since each of Adam Hirsch's songs are practically bursting with melodic ideas and instrumental textures. But the Oakland-based composer/saxophonist is responsible for every ingredient that goes into the dense layer cake of atmospheric jazz. The single "Doldrum" is a perfect distillation of what Hirsch does, laying earnest vocals over meticulous beats and drenching it all in cavernous reverb. Just when it seems to be winding down, "Doldrum" explodes with saxophone and drums, recalling Miles Davis and M83 all at once. Hear the track below.

Native Eloquence's debut LP Big Blue Nowhere is out 8/25 on Stereocure.
