Charli XCX Watches Snuff Film, Speaks In American Accent In Faces Of Death Clip

Faces Of Death looks like a fucked-up movie. The new horror flick is an adaptation of an old cult series of videos that were widely suspected to be actual snuff films in the '80s. It opens in theaters today, and it's director Daniel Goldhaber's follow-up to the fucking awesome 2022 movie How To Blow Up A Pipeline. Former Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira, who's also in the upcoming indie rock rom-com Mile End Kicks, stars as a content moderator in a plausible nightmare scenario where gruesome violence goes viral. But here's what's really unsettling about Faces Of Death: It's got Charli XCX using an American accent.

Have you ever heard Charli XCX try to sound American? I've been following her career since True Romance, and I can't remember a single instance. But Charli is in her cinematic-takeover zone, so we'll see her attempt to disappear into a bunch of different characters, Americans presumably included. We learned back in 2023 that Charli would appear in Faces Of Death. It was the first proper cinematic role that she filmed, though it's not the first to be released. In a quick new clip from the movie, we get to hear Charli's accent work.

There are lots of funny things about the new Faces Of Death promo clip. The cusswords are muted, for instance, but they did not take out the footage of a guy getting scalped. It also appears to take place in a high school hallway, but fortunately the film does not ask us to believe that Charli is a teenager. According to People, she plays a content moderator, just like her scene partner Ferreira.

In that People article, Goldhaber claims that the character's accent and clothes were Charli's own ideas: "Charli came in and had a very specific idea of what she wanted her wardrobe for Gabby to be. She was like, 'I wanna have Marla Singer from Fight Club vibes in this movie.' And I was like, 'Great.'" We don't hear Charli talk much in the clip, but her delivery of the phrase "high horse" kind of gives the game away.

Also, based on this quick glimpse, I am confident that her character will die horribly at some point in the movie. That's speculation, not a spoiler, but you've seen horror movies. You know how this shit goes. Watch the clip and the Faces Of Death trailer below.
