Bad Bad Hats & Party Nails Launch New Band Megasound, Announce Self-Titled Debut

Dan Stewart

New indie-pop supergrou alert! Since 2012, Kerry Alexander and Chris Hoge have been the main members of the cult-favorite Minneapolis group Bad Bad Hats. Last year, they released a 10th-anniversary version of their debut album Psychic Reader, with a bonus LP over other bands covering their stuff. Other bands were down to participate, and the list of contributors included Ratboys, the Front Bottoms, Hippo Campus, and Party Nails, the one-woman project from LA-based musician Elena Carroll. Now, Alexander, Hoge, and Carroll all have a new band together.

Bad Bad Hats and Party Nails have been buds for a long time. In 2018, the two acts toured together, and they ended every show with a cover of "Pretend To Be Nice," one of the songs that the late Adam Schlesinger wrote for the 2001 Josie & The Pussycats movie. Party Nails and the two main Bad Bad Hats started working on music together remotely in 2022. Now, they're calling themselves Megasound, and a press release claims that their upcoming self-titled debut album is "inspired by early 2000s rock." I definitely hear some of that in the band's catchy, spirited debut single "Supersize." Below, check out the track's Dan Stewart-directed video and the Megasound tracklist.
