King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – “Alien Metal”

Right now, the ultra-prolific Australian psych-rock crew King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are on their old-school techno shit. After playing a series of "rave" shows last year, the band fell in love with the modular Eurorack synth assemblage that they nicknamed Nathan. Using that contraption, they recorded their beautifully titled Alien Metal, album number 28 for this group. After sharing lead single "Level 5," the group is now ready to hit us in the head with the title track.

Much like "Level 5," King Gizzard's new track "Alien Metal" is an extremely fun piece of brain-busting early-'90s techno catharsis with some of the wiggy melodic choices that only this group would've made. it's got the shameless full-body physicality of so much of the music that clearly inspired it, and it seems custom-designed to be heard at 4AM in a field somewhere, while strobe lights erupt all around you and you're peaking off some drug that you never ever heard of before someone handed you a pill. It also sounds pretty sick in my office this morning, which is about as far from that context as you can get.

Both of King Gizzard's new singles could've worked as soundtracks for nightclub shootouts in B-level '90s action movies, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Check out "Alien Metal" below.

King Gizzard have not yet announced a release date for Alien Metal, which is set to arrive later this summer on their p(doom) label.
