Carly Rae Jepsen & Lena Dunham Announce 10 Things I Hate About You Broadway Musical

11:59 AM EDT on August 17, 2026

Way back in 2014, when she was just coming off of the success of her mega-hit "Call Me Maybe" and working on her critically beloved album E·MO·TION, Carly Rae Jepsen made her Broadway debut, playing the lead role in the musical Cinderella. More than a decade later, Jepsen is coming back to Broadway, but not as an actor. This time around, she's getting together with Girls auteur Lena Dunham and writing a musical based on the beloved 1999 high-school rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You. If you're a millennial theater kid, this is the dream.

We've been hearing rumblings about Carly Rae Jepsen writing a musical for more than a year, but it's official now. Variety reports that the 10 Things I Hate About You musical is set to open next year, with the first preview performances scheduled for Aug. 17, 2027. Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang are adapting the musical's book, while Carly Rae Jepsen is co-writing the songs with frequent Phoebe Bridgers collaborator Ethan Gruska. According to Playbill, it'll be directed by Christopher Wheeldon, who won a Tony for his work on MJ The Musical. Another Tony winner, Tom Kitt, will take on the arrangements, orchestrations, and music supervision.

The cast and theater hasn't been announced yet, but it's all happening. Meanwhile, Jepsen will release her new double album Day And Night next month, and we've posted the advance singles "On Wires," "After All," and "Don't Leave Me On The Dance Floor." Also, in vaguely related news, Lena Dunham says that Role Model got her addicted to Zyn, which does not seem like something that a role model should do.
