Bloc Party – “Pigwig”

Imagine that you're in a relationship and your partner's pet name for you is "Pigwig." How would that ever work? How would you have a future with this person? I truly don't believe it would matter that the nickname had a cute backstory or an emotional resonance. I'd have to get out of that situation immediately. I'd be like, "This person does not respect me." I don't think that's what I'm supposed to take away from Bloc Party's new song "Pigwig," but it's what I got.

Next month, Bloc Party will release Anatomy Of A Brief Romance, a new concept album that tells the story of a chaotic rebound relationship. The '00s blog-rock greats recorded it with veteran mega-pop producer Trevor Horn, and we've already posted their singles "Coming On Strong" and "Love Bombs." Today, they share the itchy, propulsive new song "Pigwig." It's about falling hopelessly in love, but some of the lyrics make this person sound severely irritating. For example: "My baby’s obsessed with podcasts on success/ About the ones who make it  and the ones who don’t." Cool. In a press release, frontman Kele Okereke says:

"Pigwig" is about the moment of realizing that you have been hit by a very big love, almost as if it’s against your will. During our relationship, Pigwig was my pet name, after the Beatrix Potter character — the partner of Pigling Bland — an inside joke that meant a lot to us at the time. Looking back, this song is probably one of the sweetest on the album, as it recalls a memory of a romantic seaside trip at the most magical point of our relationship.

Bloc Party teased this song on social media yesterday, and people started clowning it before the whole thing even came out.
