We're about a month out from the release of singer-songwriter Meg Lui's full-length debut Instant Validation, which she recorded with a producer by the name of Sufjan Stevens. You know about this guy? We already posted Lui's singles "Gone Girl" and "Elvis Queen." Today, she shares an old-school country song about realizing she wasn't nice enough to her parents.
Sufjan Stevens co-produced Lui's new song "Miss Queen Know It All" with Keenan O'Meara, and both Stevens and O'Meara sing backup on it. O'Meara plays pedal steel, and Stevens plays a bunch of instruments. It's a lush waltz with a gentle orchestration, and the thing I'll really take away from it is Lui's plaintive and unflinching vocal. She brings a whole lot of emotional punch to the track. Here's what she says about it:
t's basically about being a shithead to my parents and battling that little kid voice inside me that rears her fussy head every once in a while. It's realizing that no matter how much time passes and the flaws that are discovered within one's parents that they did their best with what they had at the time. Now that I'm on this new crazy journey of being a mom and a parent, I often joke that it will probably all come full circle at some point for me. But I think the only thing to do is to keep showing up with love, try to be present, and have him send me the therapy bills when the time comes.
