Back in May, Charli XCX released "Rock Music," the big-statement lead single from her new album Music, Fashion, Film. Upon arrival, the track felt like a giddy, provocative goof: "I think the dancefloor is dead, so now we're making rawwwwwwwk music." Madonna, on the brink of releasing her own dancefloor-centric album, briefly took exception, but the beef didn't last long, and now Charli is about to appear on Madonna's "Danceteria" remix, due Friday. Meanwhile, Show Me The Body have taken "Rock Music" and turned it into rock music.
Show Me The Body are New Yorkers, just like Madonna, and their sound, a jaggedly swaggering hardcore-adjacent banjo-driven attack, doesn't fit into any easy genre categories. I guess you could just say that they're makin' rock music.
A couple of weeks before the release of Music, Fashion, Film, SMTB released Alone Together, the sick new LP that they recorded with producers Kenneth Blume and Klas Åhlund. In a recent visit to the Spotify Live Room, Show Me The Body played a live-in-studio version of their own song "Do What's Right (Happy)" and busted out a fun, fucked-up take on Charli XCX's "Rock Music." Frontman Julian Cashwan Pratt hollers out Charli's tossed-off lines with maximum severity. It's a good time. Check it out below.
Alone Together is out now on Loma Vista.
