Under the moniker Yangze, his nickname since birth, Jakob Littauer is the latest avant-pop upstart to emerge out of Copenhagen. In November, he'll release his debut album Heartbreak Stew on the esteemed Escho label. It includes the previously released "Stew" and "Heart-Shaped Eyes," and it opens with today's new stunner "Okay."
In his teens, Yangze was a member of the techno group Electrojuice, which gave him the distinction of playing Berlin's famed Berghain dance club at age 16. Now he's part of the TLF Trio alongside Cæcilie Trier. His solo work finds him singing near the top of his range and pitching it up farther, creating a disorienting ultra-falsetto effect that sounds great amidst the popping and whirring of his futuristic post-genre beats. "Okay" in particular feels like a beautiful convergence of so much indie-friendly electronic pop over the years, from Ryan Hemsworth to PC Music to Yangze's fellow Escho squad.
