“The only emo band from New Jersey” has returneth. Today, emo screamers Ogbert The Nerd dropped a new single, “Stapler,” their first new music since their surprise 2024 album What You Want. The new track does not disappoint.
There’s plenty of melodramatic screaming, noodling guitars, and an anxious breakdown where the percussion simmers. “The light we chased is gone/ There’s no way out of here,” one line goes. It sounds like the band is swirling inside a sooty black hole with no escape. “I’m the dust cloud growing up inside of the air vents” is another great line. The song also ends with a succinct, perfectly placed “OOH.” I don’t know — there’s something strange about it that I just love.
